This Innovative Product Is Helping Solve Hunger One Meal at a Time
Worldwide hunger is by no means a quick fix, but one organization has found a fast (and durable) solution.
Rise Against Hunger, based in Raleigh, N.C., packages meals and sends them to those in need around the world. Their shipments are easy to store, transport, and most importantly, have a shelf life of two years.
And the group’s impact is astounding. Since the late 1990s, Rise Against Hunger has packaged over 300 million meals for people in 74 countries around the world.
These sustainable food packages are critical for providing meals to those displaced by emergencies, such as civil war and natural disasters. After Hurricane Matthew swept its way through Haiti in October of last year, Rise Against Hunger — along with partners Haiti Outreach Ministries, HopeStart International and Cross International — provided more than 2.7 million meals to nearly 20,000 affected families.
Around the world, schoolchildren often find themselves unable to afford healthy, nutritious meals, which adversely affects their ability to get an education. The meal packages provided by Rise Against Hunger, which combine rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix, are a vitamin-rich way to feed students at cash-poor schools.
The meals, however, would go nowhere without volunteers who put their heart, time, and compassion into each package.
Fortunately, on Comcast Cares Day, Comcast NBCUniversal volunteers will package these meals, and play their part in addressing this massive issue.
