IN AND OUT OF ISLAMIST EXTREMISM
BY YASMIN MALBOCUS
Many of us wonder how and why young people raised in a democracy can be lured into extremists groups. Though the issue might be complex the causes are always to be found in that person’s experiences and the hardships they faced.
Today, a mother of three, Yasmin Malbocus is doing a masters in terrorism and political violence studies but 20 years ago, she worked as a recruiter for an Islamist terrorist group that she joined after failing to find justice when she was sexually abused by a relative as a child. She believed they could protect her and perhaps succeed in providing what her own society had failed at. Mulbocus now runs a group called Muslim Active Women Around Hounslow and counsels girls in London away from joining extremist groups by trying to understand the problems they are experiencing in their own lives.
